The 25 Best (and Worst) Companies for LGBTQ Rights In America

At OpenInvest, we’re committed to standing up for LGBTQ rights in the workplace. While there has been great progress in the fight for marriage equality, protections for LGBTQ individuals in the workplace vary greatly by state. However, individual companies can protect the rights of employees and even customers. While some are making positive strides towards LGBTQ rights, there is a tremendous gap between leaders and laggards. That’s why we’ve curated a list of the 25 best and worst publicly traded companies for LGBTQ rights in America.

Each year, the Human Rights Campaign* produces the Corporate Equality Index, which rates companies from 0 to 100 on their treatment of LGBTQ employees. The index considers 5 criterion when rating companies, including: sexual orientation and gender identity in the company’s equal employment opportunity policy; domestic partner benefits; transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage; overall organizational LGBTQ competency; and public commitment for LGBTQ-specific efforts.

Drawing on the data from the Corporate Equality Index, we developed the first ever LGBTQ In the Workplace Investing Screen. We wanted to dive into our data and come up with the 25 best and worst publicly traded companies for LGBTQ rights, while also considering other social cause metrics that we believe help to create more inclusive workplaces and companies.

The 25 best companies for LGBTQ rights are not only ranked 100 on the Index, but they also:

  1. Rank as leaders for fighting climate change
  2. Are not in the tobacco industry
  3. Are not in the private prison industry and/or do not benefit/invest in for-profit prisons
  4. Have at least 0.1% or greater percentage of women in executive positions
  5. Have not financed the DAPL (Yay!)
  6. Have not publicly supported Trump’s controversial candidacy, products, and policies
