6 Celebrities Who Are Standing Up For Refugees
In light of the renewed #MuslimBan, we wanted to highlight 6 celebrities who are fighting to support refugees. Make sure to tweet your support @ them!
1. Piper Perabo
The actress is deeply involved with the International Rescue Committee and has joined them in the past on trips to crisis zones and even wrote a series of essays for the HuffingtonPost.
2. JK Rowling
The beloved author is very vocal on Twitter about social issues and she’s routinely used Twitter to raise awareness about the refugee crisis, even reaching out to UK policymakers to accept more refugees. And she’s not afraid to call people out. She’s lambasted former UK PM David Cameron for his “utterly shameful” stance on refugees.
The well-known actor and filmmaker decided to take matters into his own hand by launching a Crowdrise campaign to help raise funds for a Syrian refugee who lost seven family members.
An Olympic swimmer and Syrian Refugee herself, Yusra Mardini competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics and has since been a vocal and visible advocate for the Syrian Refugee Crisis. She was recently named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and if you haven’t read her story, you need to now. The snapshot? She swam for three hours in the sea to push a sinking boat carrying 20 to safety, risking her life to save 19 others.
5. Isla Fisher
Isla Fisher and her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, donated $1 million to Save The Children and the International Rescue Committee to help children affected by the refugee crisis. The massive donation, done quietly with little to no fanfare, provides measles vaccinations for children in northern Syria as well as helping to support the education, healthcare, shelter, and sanitation for families in Syria.
6. Angelina Jolie
No celebrity #WithRefugees list would be complete without longtime humanitarian and Special UNHCR envoy Angelina Jolie. She’s spent the better part of the last two decades visiting war crisis zones, engaging with refugees, meeting with policymakers and doing everything she can to act as an advocate. Read her powerful Op-Ed about the global refugee crisis.
